HARRINGTON, ME- Harrington Elementary School proudly embraces the joy of literacy in the great outdoors with its new Book Walk on the Hawk Hallow nature trail. This initiative is the result of collaborative efforts among the dedicated members of the Parent Teacher Support Group, the Tuscan Masonic Lodge of Addison, and other community partners. The Book Walk not only offers students the chance to explore the beauty of nature but also integrates the love of reading into their outdoor experiences.

For years, Harrington Elementary classes have utilized the nature trail for hiking, science lessons, and a variety of outdoor activities. The inspiration for the Book Walk emerged during the COVID pandemic when, faced with indoor restrictions and mask mandates, third-grade teacher Eric Brooks—now the Principal—constructed a temporary book walk using foam board. This innovative idea sparked a lasting commitment to create a more permanent and accessible display, allowing students and staff to engage with literature in a refreshing outdoor setting.

Mr. Brooks devoted time in his summers and after-school hours to prepare books for the trail, ensuring that the literary offerings were diverse and engaging. With the implementation of the new solution, books can be displayed more swiftly, creating an ever-changing literary landscape that captures students' interest.  Recently, retired second grade teacher, Sandi Leackfeldt, volunteered to prepare the newest book for the trail.

As part of its ongoing commitment to literacy, Harrington Elementary will continue fundraising efforts to maintain the Book Walk and to acquire new books. For every book featured along the nature trail, a corresponding copy will be added to the school library, ensuring that students can share these stories with their families at home.  The school is looking forward to other initiatives to bring more access to books and literature to students and families in the area.

"We must get students excited about reading," emphasized Mr. Brooks. "By combining the allure of the nature trail with captivating stories, we create an ideal environment for students to engage with books while enjoying the great outdoors.”

Harrington Elementary takes pride in being the first school in Washington County to establish a permanent Book Walk of this kind. The trail is open to the public during non-school hours, from daylight until dusk, inviting families and community members to experience this blend of literacy and nature.  Visitors are kindly reminded to stay on the designated paths and refrain from bringing pets to the area. Additionally, the school asks everyone to adhere to the carry in, carry out policy regarding trash to preserve the beauty of the trail.
